Monument record TQ 76 NW 322 - Iron Age activity, Cuxton

Summary

Iron Age features were excavated during work prior to the construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. A circular posthole structure, possibly a round house and an associated posthole enclosure with monumental entrance were recorded. A further probable fenceline and a number of possible huts may well be the settlement from which the pottery derives. Residual sherds of late Iron Age to late Roman pottery were thought to derive from a field system at the site.

Full Description

A number of pits were found containing Early and Middle Iron Age pottery dating to c. 600/550-300 BC. These were presumed to be associated with the undated enclosure and possible hut circle. The pottery from one pit was fire damaged and contained sherds from 50 different vessels. Only one later Iron Age sherd was recovered, as a residual find in the Anglo-Saxon cemetery ditch (1-7). Radiocarbon dating of charcoal from the pit suggests the pottery is more from the Middle Iron Age than the Earlier Iron Age but there is a bimodal distribution of the distribution with periods of either 400-350 cal BC or 320-200 cal BC more likely than one phase of use (8).

Prehistoric and undated features comprising pits and a hearth were also identified at the site. (1)
