Full Description

The geophysical survey revealed a complexity of archaeological anomalies including enclosures, trackways, field divisions and pit-type responses. The clearest anomalies were those associated with a sub-rectangular enclosure, approximately 50m by 60m in size. In addition to possible internal divisions, an apparent dense concentration of pits and and other anomalies was recorded within the enclosure and may represent burnt or fired remains. Approximately 60m south-east of the enclosure a ring-ditch was recorded, possibly with an internal pit. There were also indications that the enclosure and ring ditch may have been linked by a trackway. Other anomalies reminicent of field enclosures were located to the north-west of the main enclosure. The eastern half of the survey are was relatively 'quiet' suggesting a lack of archaeological features.

The proposed location of the shaft coincided with the main enclosure and therefore the apparent focus of the site and as a consequence, Southern Water proposed to relocate the tunnel shaft 99m further east, coinciding with the extreme eastern part o fthe site and the area where no geophysical anomalies were found. Five trial trenches were excavated within the new tunnel shaft area which recorded no archaeological deposits or features. A small collection of 22 worked flints of varying patination was recovered from the field surface and topsoil and a small collection of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age and Roman pottery recovered from the adjacent pipeline easement may possibly indicate the date range of the site(1).
