Full Description

A watching brief during topsoil stripping for the construction of a shaft revealed three shallow ditches. The shaft was approximately 200m east of Sandfield Farm, to the rear of West Lea Road in North Deal. Ditches 1 and 3 were aligned north-west to south-east. A third ditch was recorded at the extreme southern edge of the stripped area but appeared to form the right-angled corner of a ditched enclosure or similar feature. It evidently originally extended further to the south-east but was largely truncated by ditch 1 which ran parallel to one side of the putative enclosure. These features are likely to represent enclosures and/or field boundaries probably associated with a farmstead or small rural settlement, as yet unidentified(1).
