Full Description
In Febuary 2000 a representative of the Canterbury Archaeological Trust made three visits to St Mary's Church during the excavation of trenches and a pit for a new cess tank. Within the pit for the tank eight skulls were recovered, some from articulated burials. Disacticulated bone, showing that disturbance of earlier burials had taken place, was also present in some quantity. Several definite or possible grave cuts were visible in the eastern and northern sides of the trench. Only one piece of coffin furniture and a broken brick were observed within the soil level but there is no reason to believe any of the burials are anything other than 18th, 19th or even 20th century in date(1).
