Full Description
A probable late Bronze Age pit containing pottery and flint both worked and fire cracked was revealed during excavation at St. Edmunds School, Canterbury in 1998.
To the south of the site, a broad, shallow pit of probable LBA date produced a significant quantity of prehistoric pottery, together with work and fire-cracked flint. 26 pottery sherds were recovered from the pit; the pottery was heavily flint tempered, comprising body sherds without decoration and in apparently poor condition. 3 flint flakes were recovered from the upper fill of the pit; "a cortical waste flake in fresh condition show(ing) hard-hammer characteristics…, a patinated and broken possible soft-hammer thinning flake …usually…associated with biface manufacture" and "a small discoidal scraper/borer show(ing) direct semi-abrupt inverse removals on the right side of the proximal end, and a single direct removal on the left side" (from the original report, 1). The second of the flakes is linked to the presence of the Neolithic polished axe at the site - as the technique for its manufacture is associated with biface manufacture. The third flake is suggested to be Bronze Age in date due to the method of retouching used on it.
A single piece of fire-cracked flint was also recovered from the fill of the pit.
A Neolithic axe was also uncovered at the site in 1952 (TR 15 NW 29), around 20m the the NW of the Bronze Age pit. (1)
