Monument record TR 02 SE 69 - Prehistoric (Bronze Age) remains near Coldicott Fm, Lydd

During excavation (date of this and earlier wb unknown, but pre Sept 1998) a considerable number of small, possibly BA hearths, some with associated worked flint, together with discrete worked flint scatters, were identified on the surface of the shingle ridges close to Coldicott Farm. The site had been previously identified by a wb on topsoil stripping for ARC Southern. Whether the pattern of distribution represents the route of a trackway or is associated with more settlement activity is unclear.

Two finds of note were recovered. An end-scraper showed long sub-paralel direct removals along its distal end with additional descrete areas of direct and indirect retouch in the same scatter. (TR) A single platform core showed a discrete area of crushing on one end with 3 small flake scars radiating from the centre of the crushing. As this scarring is isolated from the core platform and associated flake scars, the primary function of this piece cannot be determined.

The general character of the flintwork and proximity of a group of EBA axes found at TR04662194 perhaps suggest a Bronze Age date for these remains.

Later medieval activity was also found in this area. (TR 02 SE 70).(1)
