Full Description

Three principle periods of activity were identified at this site; late Bronze Age, Romano-British and post-Medieval periods.

The Romano-British period features consisted of two relatively substantial, recut, broadly parallel V-shaped ditches of mid-1st century date. These perhaps formed part of a small enclosure on the higher ground on the norhtern edge of the site. The early date and prominent location of this postulated enclosure might suggest the possibility of a military function. A cremation burial in the same area, which included 5 potery vessels, was probably slightly later though still of 1st century date. No other Romano-British features were positively identified although metal-detecting recovered a notable assemblage of of late roman (3rd-4th century) coins, close to the springs at Holborough mill(1).
