Full Description
Aerial photographs indicate the presence of an interrupted ditch feature at TR 3040 5242 cutting across the modern boundary between Eastry and Tilmanstone parishes. A curve of interrupted ditches is visible as an indistinct cropmark; it is 164m from end to end and comprises two parallel, curved ditches approximately 3m apart. These two ditches have very different appearances; the western one comprising at least 17 individual ditches, 2m to 10m long and separated by causeways 1m to 8m. The eastern ditch is formed of 9 ditches which are generally much longer, between 5m and 32m, and are separated by causeways 1m to 12m across. At the southern end of the feature a dark cropmark, marked on the final plan, may represent a continuation of these ditches.
The feature is gently curved and may represent the eastern side of a very large curvilinear enclosure, if the assumed complete enclosure had a asymmetrical shape, it would have been at least 340m across and enclosed 9 hectares. Very little archaeological investigation has taken place on the site and the cropmarks themselves are very indistinct, making a definite interpretation impossible. However, based primarily on the morphological characteristics of the ditches; i.e: ditch length and width; ditch spacing and overall proportions of the features; the interpretation of a Neolithic causewayed enclosure is considered likely.
