Full Description

A medieval ditch was discovered on a north-east to south-west alignment, parallel to and c. 30m east of, the former edge of Park wood. It is likely to be of 12th - 13th century date. The pottery scatter, the medieval ditch and three stray metal-detector finds of medieval date all lie immediately to the west of a post-medieval farmstead, named as Boxley Cottage on the 1st Edition OS map of 1867, which may suggest that the farmstead has medieval origins. The documentary evidence suggests that the line of Boxley road was diverted in 1884, and that the site of the farmstead is located under, or on the eastern side of, the present road. The evaluation (in 1997) identified the southern boundary of the farmstead extending eastwards from Park Wood, and a number of lesser boundary features(1).
