Full Description
A short length of Roman ditch was discovered in May 1999 during a watching brief prior to construction of a new house on a plot of land located on the northern side of the old Woodnesborough Road, off Poulders Gardens, just outside Sandwich. The north-western side of the plot is bounded by a public footpath which has been previously suggested as part of a short Roman road that ran north-eastwards for Woodnesborough to the old shoreline of the Wantsum at Sandwich. The Roman ditch segment recorded in May 1999 lies some 12 meters south-east of the modern footpath and roughly parallel to it, suggesting that it could have originally run along the southern side of this road.
