Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Union Railways (South) Ltd (URS) to carry out an archaeological evaluation and later excavation of a site on Sandway Road, between the villages of Harrietsham to the north-west and Sandway to the south-east (centred on NGR TQ 88000 51500). Evidence of the long use of this location is evident from associated features and finds from the Late Mesolithic, Neolithic and Early Bronze Age. (1,2,4) ( See TQ 85 SE 131,132 &140)

Subsequent excavation found a NW/SE aligned ditch parallel to an earlier Early Bronze Age ditch of possible LIA or ERB from pottery sherds found in fill. (2-7)
