Full Description

During evaluation work a number of pits and a feature of medieval date were found. Pottery of the Tyler Hill type ranging in date from c.1225 to c.1475 AD was recovered. Evidence of Roman and Post-Medieval activity was also found. (1)

In 2002 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an excavation. Pits and post holes were found dating to the mid 11th or later 12th century onwards. The pits measured around 0.6-1.8m in diameter and 0.06-0.4m in depth. The pits were filled with domestic refuse and were sealed beneath a metalled surface, possibly a yard for a property fronting Wincheap. This dated to the early/mid 13th century to the mid/late 14th century. A small number of later medieval pits were also found.

A series of medieval stone walls were excavated at the site. These comprised two medieval wall footings suriving to a height of 0.08-0.1m (demonstrating that the wall as aligned N-S), and a series of further short stretches of wall surviving to heights of 0.3-0.4m and aligned E-W and N-S. The walls were constructed from flints and chalk blocks and have been interpreted as representing dwarf walls for a supporting timber frame.
Two further stretches of wall were excavated to the west of the building. These were thought to represent a wall from a medieval building and a boundary wall to the rear of the medieval building. These survived to heights between 0.28-0.3m.
Features associated with the structures include robber trenches, a cess tank, a drain, a metalled surface, and a yard .
Robber trenches were associated with several walls at the site, one of these measured 2x0.48x0.34m.
The cess tank was chalk-block lined and an associated with a construction trench. A deposit of brickearth capped the tank. A drain cut measuring 3.5m in length was identified associated with the wall of one of the buildings. The drain itself was formed from peg-tiles and chalk blocks.
One of the metalled surfaces at the site was interpreted as representing an alley-way which ran down the side of one building.

Finds included 11th-16th century pottery, peg-tile, medieval roof tile, a child's finger ring, a quatrefoil mount or tack with a heraldic motif, a scabbard chape and an openwork mount. A medieval copper alloy spatula was excavated from a Roman context. This find has been interpreted as a medical instrument. A residual find of a fragment of Imperial Porphyry Marble - thought to date from the Roman period - was also identified at the site. (2)
