Full Description

The filling of a hollow depression located in evaluation trenching at South Barracks, Gladstone Road, Deal, in 2001 was found to contain two distinct archaeological layers - an upper dark grey-brown silty clay, overlapping a generally more extensive layer of mottled cream silty clay. Both deposits showed some slight evidence of horizontal lamination/banding, such as would be consistant with sediments laid down by water. There was no dating evidence. This feature was identified as an ancient pond (Pond E) and is one of several recorded during work on Deal Barracks sites. " (1)"
