Full Description

A total of 620 flints of late neolithic/early bronze age date, a significant proportion of which display evidence of working, found during spoil heap searches at South Barracks, Gladstone Road, Deal. Virtually all pieces are unpainted, most being produced from the local mottled black and grey downland flint. Some 15-20% of the artefacts, however, have been made from flint beach pebbles and cobbles, similar to those from the present-day foreshore east of the site. However, this foreshore is of indeterrminate origin, so may or may not have been the prehistoric source of these artefacts. (1)
