Full Description
During the second phase of evaluation work prior to planting of woodland for the Whte Horse Millennium Wood, a previously unknown ovoid enclosure was discovered. The enclosure measures approximately two-thirds of a hectare in area. The enclosing ditch was V-shaped and in places c.3m wide and 1.15m deep. No entrance was detected within the trenches excavated.
Within the enclosure a number of discrete pits and spreads of materials were identified, but only four were sampled in the time available. From the pits and ditches a number of worked flints were recovered along with sherds of flint tempered pottery.
Only three trenches outside of the enclosure contained features. Theres were general of unknown date although one rectangular feature filled with burnt material contained a large rim sherd of flint-tempered pottery.(1)
Watching Brief undertaken at White Horse Wood, Thurnham during stripping for a footpath uncovered no archaeological finds or features, although the stripping was very shallow. (2)
Watching brief in July 2003 in preparation of ground for re-seeding. No archaeological features or finds except for a single Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery sherd recovered from a stripped area in front of the enclosure (3)
