Monument record TQ 85 NW 127 - Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age Enclosure, White Horse Wood, Thurnham
Summary
During the second phase of evaluation work prior to planting of woodland for the White Horse Millennium Wood, a previously unknown oval enclosure was discovered. The enclosure measures approximately two-thirds of a hectare in area. The enclosing ditch was V-shaped and in places c.3m wide and 1.15m deep. No entrance was detected within the trenches excavated.
Within the enclosure a number of discrete pits and spreads of materials were identified, but only four were sampled in the time available. From the pits and ditches a number of work flints were recovered along with sherds of flint tempered pottery.
