Medieval ditches found during an excavation by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at land to the rear of Prospect House, Fairfield Road, New Romney, Kent. These possibly relate to a building of a similar date which was also discovered at this location. The first ditch was located in the southern corner of the site aligned diagonally roughly east-west across the foundation trench. A width of 0.82cm was measured at the top of the cut. The edges were observed to cut down 22cm through dark grey silty sand into the upper surface of the natural claen yellow sand. Its sides generally curved inwards to a flat base which sloped gradually towards the southeast. Lining the base of the feature was a sequence of dumped burnt clay fragments and carbon deposits in alternative layering, possibly suggesting a destroyed building and industrial workings nearby. The second ditch was located towards the northwest side of the site. This ditch was 0.8m wide and aligned southeast by northwest running across the foundation trench, cutting through the clean yellow sands. A small group of pottery from its fill were dated to 1225-1275. (1)
