Monument record TQ 85 SE 143 - Roman Pit & Associated Finds, St. John the Baptist Churchyard, Harrietsham

Summary

During the opening of a number of graves, features and finds were recovered indicating Romano-British occupation activity. An elliptical pit was found containing a high percentage of daub and charcoal. Also included in the pit were two peices of tapped iron slag and a copper alloy ring. In another grave opening close to this pit was found an area of charcoal and daub including small sherds of pottery, iron slag and part of a shale ring.

Full Description

During the opening of a number of graves, features and finds were recovered indicating Romano-British occupation activity. An elliptical pit was found containing a high percentage of daub and charcoal. Also included in the pit were two peices of tapped iron slag and a copper alloy ring.

In another grave opening close to this pit was found an area of charcoal and daub including small sherds of pottery, iron slag and part of a shale ring. This activity is probably connect with the nearby IronAge/Romano-British settlement nearby (TQ 85 SE 138).
