Full Description

During trial trenching a number of highly truncated archaeological features were found as well as a spread of prehistoric lithic material. As a result contingency trenches were dug around this area under controlled conditions. There was a small but significant assemblage of finds which appears to represent waste left by transient groups of hunter-gathers. A tranchet axe found appears to have been made and used at the site. Following the evaluation's initial findings, test pits were dug in 2004 by Archaeology South-East. These found further flints but did not find any evidence that they were in situ on an undisturbed land surface. (2)

During 2005 Archaeology South-East carried out a programme of test pitting across the area. This work located c.379 worked flints. These were all dated to the Early Neolithic, apart from one straight backed bladelet dating to the Mesolithic. All of the finds were ex situ and not on an undisturbed working surface. (3)
