Full Description
Archaeological investigations undertaken in January 2002 at Worthing House during excavations of a foundation trench for a new extension, uncovered evidence for Medieval activity comprising:
A large pit, of which its full extent or width could not be determined, measuring at least 3.50m by 1.50m across and more than 0.30m deep.
The size of the pit suggests it is possible it was dug as a quarry to extract brickearth.
It was in-filled with clay containing domestic refuse and seems to have been completely levelled by the early-mid thirteenth century. The pits fill contained Medieval pottery sherds dated from cAD1175 to 1225, oyster shell and bone. (1)
