Full Description
Excavation of 14 evaluation trenches in August and September 2001 at Boys Hall Road, Ashford produced evidence of medieval activity comprising:
Two narrow linear features running parallel north-west to south-east, both had similar fills and one contained pottery dating from AD1175-1250.
In the north-east corner of the site several contemporary features were concentrated around the remains of a small rectangular building. The remains of several post holes were present in three corners of the building. A small cluster of five post holes were in the centre of the structure. Two phases of a hearth was found within the building the first included pottery dating AD 1175 - 1250. After disuse the area of the hearth had been re-levelled and a subsequent hearth constructed, the levelling deposits included pottery dating to before AD 1250
A gully aligned north-east was uncovered in the front of the building to the south.
The building was enclosed on two sides by ditches. One was to the west of the building running north-west to south-east, contained within the fill was a copper-alloy ring and pottery dated between AD1175 - 1250. The other ditch was located to the south and was running north-east to south-west and contained pottery dated to AD1175 -1250.
A hearth was located south-east of the southern ditch, it's fill contained pottery dating from AD 1125 - 1375.
An isolated post hole was located to the far south-east of the site, at the limits of the excavation and contained pottery dated AD1125 - 1250.
Site had previously been occupied in the prehistoric period (TR 04 SW 127) and then abandoned until the medieval period. (1)
