Monument record TR 15 NW 622 - Possible Early Medieval Quarry Pits, North Lane Carpark

Summary

Evaluation trenches revealed a number of features including an Iron Age ditch (TR 15 NW 514) sealed by layers associated with a previously unknown Roman road(TR 15 NW 621). A number of pits (TR 15 NW 622), south-east of the road were investigated but no stratigraphic relationship was established between these pits and the road. They were probably quarry pits for the near by pottery and tile industry and possibly date to the early medieval period

Full Description

Evaluation trenches revealed a number of features including an Iron Age ditch (TR 15 NW 514) sealed by layers associated with a previously unknown Roman road(TR 15 NW 621). A number of pits (TR 15 NW 622), south-east of the road were investigated but no stratigraphic relationship was established between these pits and the road.
