Monument record TR 15 NW 626 - Medieval feature at Station Road West, Canterbury

Summary

Evaluation prior to proposed development. Although all pre-medieval features in the area seem to have been destroyed, a number of medieval and post-medieval features were found. The medieval features included a pit, a post hole, a possible terrace, and a wall. The pit, or possible terrace, ran east-west. It was filled with oyster shell, peg-tile, flint, chalk pieces and pottery dating from c. 1250-1350. The post-hole was shallow, square and the only one found. The wall was made of chalk and ran roughly north-east to south-west and interpreted as a foundation. None of the early maps show a building on this site and it is possible that it is an external boundary wall.
