Full Description
Evaluation of proposed development area. All trenches, bar one, produced archaeological features. The features were almost all pits, either rubbish or cess, and although contained a minimal amount of artefactual material, their similarity suggests that they are all from the same period and early medieval in date. There was no evidence of Roman kilns on the site. (1)
The area to the west of the evaluation was excavated in 2004 by Canterbury Archaeological Trust. Six sunken floored buildings were found. Each consisted of a rectangular pit with either one or two posts to support the timber structure above. Ten pits were also found. A necklace of 18 glass beads was found in one pit, the individual beads dating from the later Iron Age, the Roman period and the early medieval period. The site was occupied from the early 8th century until at least the middle of the 9th century. (1)
