Monument record TR 15 NE 415 - Possible Pomerium Boundary Ditch and Later Road Near Diocesan House, 26 Broad Street, Canterbury
Summary
Two excavations carried out in 1992 at 'Diocesan House,' 26 Broad St, Canterbury for deep new foundations for office block extension. North-east of a group of inhumation burials, TR 15 NE 414, the area was cut by a 0.4m deep and 3m wide ditch running north-south. It is likely that this is a boundary ditch, but bounding what is unclear. It has been suggested that this may have been a pomerium marking the division between the city and its hinterland. Later the ditch silted up and covered by a layer of metalling, probably for a short-lived minor road.
