Full Description
During evaluation trenching the base of a refuse pit was uncovered containing pottery of around 20-30 AD and metalwork( an iron latch-lifter and an iron fitting. The material recovered from the pit, metalwork, pottery and daub with wattle impressions, suggested that they were debris from a disused structure, probably a building likely in the area now occupied by Broome House. The focus, form and extent of the occupation of this settlement is not known, but pottery recovered as residual finds in the nearby trenches suggest activity extending into the early Romano-British period through to the early 2nd century AD. Fragments of Upchurch ware (late 1st - early 2nd century) and Canterbury grey sandy ware (late 1st - early 2nd century).(1)
