Monument record TR 15 NE 426 - Romano-British Activity at 24a Old Dover Road

Summary

Evaluation prior to new housing development uncovered archaeological evidence of activity from the Roman period. No evidence of the Roman road was uncovered but features from trenches one and two, five trenches in total, may have been clay quarries similar to remains found at the nearby Police Station (TR 15 NE 166). Further features were also found in trenches 4 & 5. A pit was excavated in Trench 4 with Roman pottery, one piece clearly 3rd/4th century and in trench 5 eighteen features, three forming a small complex, with Roman pottery, one piece again from the 3rd/4th century.
