Full Description

The remains of an iron furnace found whilst the replacement of a soakaway and drain. The remains were, A) part of the iron that forms in the dished base of the furnace as it cools , B) tap slag and C) furnace clinker.

A) A piece of semi circular convexed iron, measuring 150mm wide and 45mm thick, representing the base of a furnace.
B) Four pieces of tap slag up to 50mm x 60mm. They show a running molten iron finish on the top surface.
C) Three large pieces of furnace clinker up to 200mm diameter. The mottled red/pink and white ash was welded into a firm mass which could only be broken with the use of a hammer. This clinker forms opposite the air blast inlet within a furnace. (1)
