Summary

The lowest courses of the standing retaining wall of the Unitarian Church, that was being underpinned, is constructed of large lumps of Folkestone Greensand set in a cream gritty mortar, typical of masonry buildings built in Dover during the later Medieval period. These two courses are most likely the remnants of the original Medieval wall which has been repaired and replaced over the centuries. Full Description

It was noted during an archaeological watching brief undertaken during the underpinning and re-facing of the retaining wall in front of the Unitarian Church that the lowest courses of the standing retaining wall which was being underpinned, is constructed of large lumps of Folkestone Greensand set in a cream gritty mortar, typical of masonry buildings built in Dover during the later medieval period. These two course are most likely the remnants of the original medieval wall which has been repaired and replaced over the centuries.(1-2)
