THE 2 EARLY 19C CADT IRON COLUMNS ARE THE ONLY REMAINS OF THE MILL. 1 IS FLUTED AND 1 ID PLAIN WITH DECORATED CAPITALS. THE SLUICE GATES HAVE STONE BANLS AVD CONTAIN MACHINERY IN WOR,ING ORDER. ALSO CAST IRON BRIDGE DATED 1830?

From the Register of Scheduled Monuments:

Site of Mill belonging to Abbot of St Augustines and sluice in Mill Lane. Mill late 18th century - two cast iron pillars survive with decorated caps. Also cast iron wheel shaft and bearings in situ. This is the 1795 mill built by Smeaton - an important Industrial monument on an important early medieval site. The final Mill was burnt down in 1933. The cast iron wheel shaft and two cast iron pillars are still in position. The sluice has twin stone arches.(1)

The Cantebrury UAD states that Abbot' s Mill was founded c. 1100-1140 belonged to the Abbot and monks of St. Augustine's Priory. Previously called Browns Mill. Later rebuilt in 1792, but burrnt down in 1933.

A watching brief was undertaken at St Radigund's Bridge in January 1995 during the resurfacing of the western half of the bridge and the replacement of the northern parapet. The work was paid for by Kent County Council (Highways and Transportation) and the site code was SRB95

At the western end of the bridge a service trench exposed a c. 6m length of the 14th century defensive wall of which the upper portion was a rebuild.
