Full Description
[TQ 75105782] Roman Remains found A.D. 1844 [NAT] (1) Roman circles and other remains have been noticed at various times close to Allington Castle [TQ 75 NE 21] in particular in 1844 when four large tiles of a hypocaust pillar were dug up to the west of the castle. Objects from the area are in Maidstone Museum. (2-3) There is a large number of Roman tiles in store in Maidstone Museum of unknown provenance, among which may be the above. The museum have no records of any finds coming from this site, and nothing appears to be known about it (a). Enquiries at the Castle were negative. (4) Additional bibliography. (5-6) A field survey at Allington Castle noted 2 dished earthworks one approx. 20m and the other 15-20m in diameter. The first is at NGR TQ 7507 5778 and the second at TQ 7516 5777 about 40m SW of the possible Roman building. Both have gently sloping sides and are around 10-15cm deep. (7-9) KE 58 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa. (10)
