Summary

Two Romano British rubbish pits were found in 1958 containing 3rd to 4th century pottery, coins, a tweezers, nails and a knife blade. The finds are in Maidstone Museum accession number 61/1958.

Full Description

Two RB rubbish pits were cut through by workmen of Kent County Council in July-August of 1958 during operations for widening Forstal Road, off the Maidstone-Chatham Road. Mr. Peter Fuller, K.C.C. Roads Department, who inspected and investigated the site, indicated the exact position at TQ 75215822. The finds in store in Maidstone Museum include 3rd c. coarse pottery, mostly grey wares (flanged bowls, jars etc.), miscellaneous sherds of 3rd-4th c. date, a spindle whorl, a knife blade, nails and miscellaneous metal fragments, also 14 3rd-4th c. coins. A further coin, a Valens solidus, is on display together with a pair of bronze tweezers (accession number 61/1958). (1) additional bibliography (2-4)
