Full Description
In 1993 a watching brief was undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust on the fields to the east of Canterbury Hill and St Stephens Hill, Tyler Hill. At St. Stephen's Hill two intercutting pits were excavated full of medieval decorated and plain glazed floor tiles, pegtiles and pottery. Some of the tiles had fused together sheding light on how the kilns were stacked. The decorated two-colour tiles found date to c.1280-1350 AD. As well as the commoner Tyler Hill designs Fleur-de-Lys, daisies and heraldic birds and animals, rarer designs were found. These include an archer and hound hunting a deer, lions, geometric designs and stylized oak leaves or scorpion. These pits are important as they are of a similar date showing the range of designs that would have been available, the number of tiles found could be statistically analysed and that some of the rarer designs were thought to originate from central Kent.(1)
