Monument record TQ 57 NW 98 - Dartford Cement Works, Dartford
Summary
Established, it is believed, between 1870 and 1897 when a small pit was operating just east of the site (TQ 57 SW 241), which consisted of two principle buildings. A tramway led from the pit vis the works to a wharf (TQ 57 SW 1006) at Darfrod Creek just upstream of the lock. By 1909 the easterly of the two buildinsg had doubled in size with ten tram-lines entering it and a travelling crane was added to the wharf. The works did not expand during the 1930's and may have gone out of use during this period. The site has since been cleared. It may have been operated by William and Charles Hewitt in 1891 although that is stated not to have continued beyond 1911.
