Monument record TQ 77 SE 158 - Possible Late Bronze Age pit, Four Elms Roundabout A289, Frindsbury Extra

Summary

A pit containing probable Late Bronze Age ceramic material was found during work on the new route of the A289. The sherds were identified as of the Devereal-Rimbury type. As the finds were fairly worn they may have been residual in nature. Across the site a quantity of lithic and ceramic material was found, mostly from the topsoil. This was seen as at least indicative of occupation in close proximity, if not on the site itself.

Full Description

During Excavation at the Four Elms Roundabout on the new route of the A289, a pit was found containing probable Late Bronze Age ceramic material possibly of the Devereal-Rimbury type. These finds were fairly worn and so may be residual in nature. Across the site a quantity of lithic and ceramic material was found. The bulk was form the topsoil and if not suggesting occupation in situ, then at least in the surrounding area.(1-3)

A biface (bifacial axe) of early/middle Pleistocene (=Lower Palaeolithic or early Middle Palaeolithic) was found (unstratified) as a surface find during fieldwalking. The lithic fragments and pottery have been redated. The lithic material is from residual contexts or incorporated in the fill of later features and is probably of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. About 30 sherds of pottery of Middle Bronze Age (in Deverel-Rimbury tradition) date were found, mostly small worn sherds from residual contexts, apart from a group of medium-sized sherds from a pit.
