The high ground at the southern side of the development area at Ingress Abbey contains the northern edge of the Boyn Hill/Orsett Heath Pleistocene formation. Consequently, eight evaluation test pits were dug into suspected Pleistocene deposits at the south western corner of the site. Palaeolithic flint flakes were found in two test pits, two (in TP3) in gravels interpreted as fluvial gravels of Boyn Hill terrace, and two in mixed sand/gravel lower down the slope in TP 4 (1). Monitoring in later 1999 led to the recovery of 4 further flakes from the terrace gravels near TP3 (2, 3).
