Full Description

A metal detector survey along the proposed route of the A228 improvements recorded a limited amount of Roman material. Two of the items from the Rochester end of the investigation were identified as possibly coming from high status objects. A small cast lead alloy lion head mask, may come from the base of a vessel handle, while a copper alloy fragment (with a roughened surface apparently representing fur), may come from a figurine or statuette. One possible Roman coin was also recorded
Some categories of item were in use from the Roman period onwards and cannot be independently dated (they are termed Roman/post medieval in the catalogue). These included small flat headed copper nails and tiny amounts of solidified molten lead and copper alloy. Separate finds records were not created for them.
Items from the metal detector survey were recorded unstratified and interpreted as having been lost or dropped.
Evidence of some medieval activity (TQ 77 SE 167), a series of late post-medieval and modern land drainage and management systems and a late 19th century building foundation (TQ 77 SE 168) were also identified during the works.
The perimeter of the archaeological works along the 3.5km dual carriageway project, is given in the grid refs section of the main monument form, with a centre point [1].
