Full Description
The National School (boys and girls) site at West Hill, Dartford. The building as the National School is shown on the Ordnance Survey map 1862-1875, then as Holy Trinity School on the 1897-1952 maps. The school was established on the site in 1826 and the majority of the buildings were demolished in 1996/7. The eastern side of the site had been terraced for the school, an act that had removed evidence of archaeological activity in this area [1].
Archaeological evaluation and excavation work undertaken on the land of the former school identified a prehistoric feature (TQ 57 SW 250), an early Medieval cemetery (TQ 57 SW 207), a 11th-12th century building (TQ 57 SW 251) and a medieval boundary ditch (TQ 57 SW 252).
The site of a medieval leper hospital and later almshouses is recorded immediately east of the site (TQ 57 SW 48) [2].
