Full Description

A series of archaeological investigations carried out between 1997 and 2001 in advance of development found the remains of a site that flourished between approximately 100 BC to 200 AD. The remains consisted of two enclosures primarily associated with grain processing and only uncertain evidence of settlement. A late iron age enclosure to the north and nearby Roman remains suggest the area was one of more widespreadh agricutural use and occupation.

Although modern disturbance had removed all but deeply cut features, two areas of intense features, pits, postholes and rubbish pits, etc. were found either side of a trackway. The site may represent the fringes of the main settlement, due to the number of rubbish pits, dated to around 100 BC to 200 AD. Finds included iron nails, knife fragments, animal bones, oyster shell and pottery shreds. (1-2)
