Full Description

A watching brief at Plots E1 and 2 of Eurolink Business Park, produced some evidence for Roman features. Much of the site had been affected by brickearthing and levelling associated with the brick kilns to the north east (TQ 96 SW 208).
Just to the west of the south-west corner of the main building and beneath the office block annex the remains of a possible Roman wall foundation were observed. Running approximately north-south, its north end had been truncated away, nor was it seen south of the office block foundations. The cut for the wall foundation appeared to flare out at its base, filled with sand, pea grit and flint nodules. In some of the slots through the foundation, a mortar like material was seen on the top surface of the foundation material. When the sections were joined up (on a map) they formed a straight line, although the foundations were not seen in the stripped ground between the office block's footings. At one point the wall was truncated by a later undated pit.
East of the wall foundations, a truncated area of brickearth containing charcoal and four flint flakes, may represent settlement activity contemporary with the wall. Between the area of brickearth and the later brick kiln foundations to the north-east, an area of consolidated ground was recorded that may have formed a work surface associated with the other possible Roman features.
The features were dated to the Roman period due to the proximity of other Roman finds and settlement activity in the area. No direct dating evidence was recovered from any of the features [1].
