Full Description
During a watching brief to the rear of 67-71 High Street, Tonbridge, one portion of trenching revealed a section through intact archaeological deposits. A series of dump and floor layers were recorded. At the base of the sequence a thick dump layer dated to the mid 13th-14th centuries suggested that land levels between the riverbanks were being raised and stabilised earlier than previously thought. Above this were a series of floor and dump layers interpreted as activity within a timber structure. This continued into the 16th century when the building may have served an industrial function. These deposits were covered by further dumps of material, prior to the levelling of the site for the construction of the existing buildings in the late 18th century (see TQ 54 NE 74) [1].
