Full Description
Brief Record. Ditches, post holes, a well and road surface found during a 2003 Channel 4 " Time Team" excavation. Some form of ribbon development may have been established close to or along side the nearby Watling Street Roman road.
832 sherds, in poor to moderate condition. Majority belong to Late Iron Age and Romano-British period, but a small group of 22 sherds may belong to an earlier Iron Age phase. Various types of vessels, jars, bowls, beakers, cooking pot and amphorae. Various types of ware (grog-tempered, coarse and fine grey ware, coarse and fine orange firing ware, fine white firing ware, shell-tempered ware).
Imbrex and tegula roof tiles.
About.50 Roman coins. All either copper alloy or base silver. As of Claudius (AD 41-54) and sestertius of Hadrian (AD 117-38). Most (42 coins) were late C3rd/early C4th date. The latest coins are 9 Valentinian ones dating to AD 364-78.
202 fragments of animal bone recovered from variety of contexts dating from the Late Iron Age to the C4th AD. Some were redeposited in the post-medieval period. Mostly cattle, though small percentage of sheep, horse, pig and deer bones were also found.
Three hobnails. Single fragment of Romano-British glass from vessel. 7 probable Roman-British copper alloy objects - armlet fragment, stud, 2 shanks, a possible awl, a toilet instrument and a finger ring.
Residual prehistoric sherds (redeposited material) found in Roman contexts. Flint tempered fabrics. (1)
