Full Description
The second phase of features recorded on the site at Barton Hill, after the mid bronze age-late iron age phase (TQ 97 SW 76).
The putative sunken feature building structures were only seen in the excavation stage of the works (see evaluation report, a few early medieval pottery sherds were collected during the evaluation-1).
The pottery recovered from the sunken feature buildings was all prehistoric, although much of the assemblage may be residual as the sherds are small and abraded. The form of the features are suggestive of early medieval sunken feature buildings, with clear post-holes and sunken bases. Two of the features had a ledge or step rather than postholes, it is suggested that the structure above these may have been weighed down. One feature had no internal structure, but was on a similar alignment to the others.
A small early medieval pottery assemblage was recorded from residual contexts. The contents of the samples taken from the putative sunken feature buildings are considered consitent with that interpretation [2].
