Full Description
Rectilinear enclosures visible as cropmarks in aerial photos of 1990, to the west of Westwood. One enclosure measures 35m square, another 35m x 30m, and a third which adjions it measures 35m x 22m with a kink along the SE side. The enclosures are either side of an 8m wide trackway. All enclosures are aligned 45 degrees to the cardinal points, the same as enclosures to the north (TR 36 NE 279). There are hints of further enclosures / linear features in the field to the south, though on a different alignment. See also TR 36 NE 279 and TR 36 NE 452. See also (1)
An evaluation by Archaeology South-East in 2011 found the ditches dating to the 13th and 14th century. (2)
In 2011 or 2012 Wessex Archaeology carried out a strip, map and sample excavation of the site in two phases. Again evidence of this medieval activity was encountered, with the primary focus of activity located across the phse 1 excavation area (the westernmost of the two). Features in this area are dominated by linear ditches and gullies with several discrete features, quarry pits and a sunken feature building which is most likely a bakery. The archaeological remains in the north-western part of the Phase 1 can be linked to the features recorded during the MBUWWTS works conducted in 2005 adjacent to Star Lane. Indeed many of the enclosure ditches in this area can be matched to the enclosures found during the 2005 phase of works. The remains all indicate the Site was predominantly used for agricultural activity perhaps around an as yet undiscovered focal point. This may lie beneath the extant farmhouse which is located to the north-west of the Site. The artefactual evidence taken along with the assessment of the environmental remains, suggest the Site was used for low level agricultural activity perhaps acting as a supply to the communal/estate bakeries. The Phase 2 remains are located to the east of the main focus of activity and are more indicative of general field and enclosure systems spreading to the north-east.
The features were largely found to date to the to the 13th and 14th centuries from the pottery evidence, though there was some some of the finds evidence was earlier in date (11th-12th centuries) and it is possible that at least some of the enclosures dated to the 13/14th centuries through the pottery recovered, may have been in use earlier in the 11th and 12th centuries and simply been cleaned out and recut in the later period, thereby removing earlier dating evidence.. An intact vessel was found within a small enclosure associated with a post hole. It was not associated with any cremated remains and so may have formed some other type of ritual deposit. (3)
