Full Description

During a watching brief on groundworks for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link close to Fawkham Junction, six boundary ditches were found aligned north- south. All had "V" shaped profiles and contained Roman pottery sherds. One of the ditches, all are believed to have been field boundaries, had been re-cut at least four times. Two of the ditches had cut four pits, from a total of five found, but from what period these pits date, or their relationship to the ditches is not yet clear. One of the pits contained the remains of a Roman pot containing cremated bone. This may have been disturbed in the Roman period during the period of ditch construction and redeposited in a pit. Also a shallow feature lined with burnt clay had cut one of the ditches. No datable evidence was found in association with the feature thought to have been an oven.(1 & 2)

Description from record TQ 56 NE 101:
A series of parallel ditches aligned north-south cut by four later pits. The pottery and animal bone assemblages from their fills indicate that the ditches probably enclosed part of a settlement, rather than fileds. The settlement appears to have expanded over time with the pits cutting the earlier ditch features. (1)
