Full Description

During archaeological works north of Lydden Lodge, Margate, a section of medieval ditch was recorded. None of the other archaeological features exposed contained any dating evidence, although the other ditches recorded may by association, be medieval in date. The dated medieval ditch was recorded during the initial evaluation, when an excavated slot recorded oyster shell, animal bone and four sherds of 12-14th century Tyler Hill sandy ware pottery in the upper fill of the ditch. A second segment of the ditch was believed to have been recorded in the second evaluation trench (therefore forming a continuous ditch); however the later watching brief on the site showed that the ditch could not be continuous, although it may have formed part of a segmented medieval enclosure. The other linears may by association have formed a small complex of medieval enclosures and related features (see 1 and 2). See 2 also for the possible phasing of the undated features.
