Full Description
The majority of the residual iron age pottery came from the excavated footings of a probable Roman timber post built structure and one pit that was interpreted as being a late post medieval or modern feature. The quantity of pottery recovered, implies an iron age presence on or near the site. The pottery report suggests that there two phases of iron age activity reflected in the assemblage, an early to mid iron age and late iron age or 'Belgic' phase, although worn flint tempered sherds may imply a continuity of activity between the two. One Roman feature recorded on site could be iron age in date, a pit containing a small ?cache of hammerstones (see TR 37 SE 350) [1]. See also Monument records TR 37 SE 348, 350, 351 and 352 for information on the prehistoric flint, the Roman and the post medieval archaeology recorded on site.
