Abstract/Summary

Report on a watching brief conducted on land to the rear of 16-18 Dane Hill, Margate. This small site produced nine archaeological features. Four pits set in a square arrangement together with a shallow terrace, all produced pottery of 2nd century date and were interpreted as the platform and foundations of a Roman timber post-built structure. Residual Iron Age pottery was also recovered from these features suggesting an Iron Age presence on or near the site. In additon, one large undated pit, one possible Iron Age or Roman pit and a late Industrial or Modern pit were recorded. A portion of a backfilled Tunnel was examined, which may have been associated with the Napoleonic era Fort on nearby Fort Hill. Residual bronze age flint was also identified.
