Full Description
Part of the entrance shaft and passage of a probable 19th century tunnel were recorded during archaeolgical works on land to the rear of 16-18 Dane Hill, Margate. The entrance shaft ran along the northern edge of the site, before turning at right angles to the north west and heading under Clifton Street. The shaft and passage had been backfilled with chalk rubble. The exposed section of entrance shaft had a stepped base. Investigation showed that the shaft had cut through redeposited soils lying over the chalk natural. This clearance of the site down to natural has been dated to the late 18th/early 19th century, as late post medieval pottery was found in the top of a number of earlier features; therefore the tunnel is probably of 19th century date. This clearance probably coincides with the construction of Fort Paragon (see TR 37 SE 69), on Fort Hill to the north west. The report concludes that the tunnel may potentially be associated with the Fort [1].
