Full Description

In 2005 an archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of the construction of Dartford Football Ground and ancillary development. The evaluation revealed evidence for late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age postholes but the archaeological record appeared to be dominated by late Iron Age/Roman activity. The most common features were circular and/or sub-circular pits that may have functioned as storage or work pits. Much of the archaeology was undated but nine features contained pottery dated between 50 BC to AD 100. It is likely that many of the features are contemporary. The undated pits show comparable atttributes with the dated pits, such as fill and type, and potentially show an active late Iron Age/early Roman landscape. The broad shallow features may have been dug to extract gravel (1).
