Full Description
In area 9 of the arch archeological excavation a large number of features were recorded: The ditches formed part of a rectilinear pattern of a land division on a north-south alignment. These enclosure ditches were only partially preserved or extended beyond the area of excavation. Ten pits were recorded within the area are thought to be contemporary and connected with the field system. A number of ditches/gullies were not part of the enclosure system but crossed the easement at regular intervals on a roughly east-west alignment. A small Romano-British cremation cemetry was located within the area; enclosed by a number of small gullies that seperated the cremations into two group of three and four graves respectively. The burials were unurned. One or two ancillary pots, associated with the burials, were positioned within the graves. In total there were six complete and four incomplete vessels. The cremated bone appears to have been placed within wooden boxes of which only fragments of copper or iron hinges survive (1).
